Daehan Shipbuilding has obtained Approval in Principle (AIP) for its smart ship technology from the global classification society DNV, accelerating its push into the smart ship market.

According to Daehan Shipbuilding on the 12th, a certification ceremony was held on the 10th at DNV’s Busan office for the AIP of its “smart ship platform incorporating DNV Cyber Security Plus notation.”

The ceremony was attended by Lee Kyung-seok, Head of the Technical Division at Daehan Shipbuilding; Lee Jung-eun, Head of DNV Korea; and Kim Wan-kyu, CEO of Marineworks.

In recent years, global shipbuilders have increasingly sought to adopt smart ships by integrating digital technologies into vessel operations—such as connecting ships at sea with onshore control centers in real time.

Korea’s three major shipbuilders are also developing and applying smart ship solutions, with continuous updates underway.

In line with this trend, Daehan Shipbuilding has launched its proprietary smart ship platform brand, SNaut® (meaning “one who navigates intelligently”).

In collaboration with Marineworks, a Korean company specializing in navigation equipment and smart ship solutions, Daehan Shipbuilding developed a smart ship platform incorporating DNV Cyber Security Plus notation and obtained AIP from DNV in April.

The certified smart ship platform enables real-time monitoring of vessel operations from the company’s headquarters through integrated navigation equipment.

It also allows for optimal vessel operation and safety support from both sea and shore, with the capability to remotely monitor and control various onboard systems.

Additionally, with built-in cybersecurity features, the platform ensures information protection policies for vessels and includes antivirus protection against external cyberattacks.

Lee Kyung-seok, Head of the Technical Division, stated, “We are now able to provide shipowners with a smart ship platform that offers enhanced safety and reliability. This AIP serves as proof that Daehan Shipbuilding’s technological capabilities are on par with those of major domestic shipyards, and we will continue to strengthen our competitiveness through ongoing updates.”
