Eight companies, including HD Hyundai Marine Solution, Marineworks, and LG CNS, will share technologies for optimal route planning and predictive maintenance

The Korea Shipowners’ Association is stepping up efforts to accelerate the artificial intelligence transformation (AX) of Korean shipping companies in response to increasingly stringent global environmental and safety regulations and the ongoing shift toward digitalization.

The initiative aims to move AI technologies beyond the conceptual review stage and apply them directly to operational efficiency and safety management, including optimal route planning and predictive vessel maintenance.

According to the shipping industry on August 27, the Busan Office of the Korea Shipowners’ Association will host the “Shipping Industry AX Strategy Technology Briefing” at 2:00 p.m. on September 2 at the Grand Auditorium of the Busan Trade Center in Jung-gu, Busan.

The briefing is a follow-up initiative to the Association’s “Shipping Industry AX Strategy” report published in July. It will focus on accelerating the practical commercialization of four priority areas identified in the report:

• Optimal route planning
• Smart documentation
• Predictive maintenance of engines and hulls
• Onboard safety accident prevention systems

Eight leading technology companies from the maritime and information technology (IT) sectors will participate in the technology-sharing sessions and present their latest solutions.

Participating companies include HD Hyundai Marine Solution, LG CNS, Korean Register (KR), Kongsberg Maritime, Marineworks, Team Reboot, RAB Korea, and Chokwang Paint.

The companies are expected to showcase technologies such as algorithms that minimize fuel consumption using vessel operational big data, sensor-data-based systems for the early diagnosis of main engine failures, and Vision AI technologies for monitoring hazardous areas onboard vessels.

Through the event, the Association aims to lower technological barriers for small and medium-sized Korean shipping companies that face challenges in establishing their own R&D infrastructure. It also plans to expand a continuous technology-matching network connecting shipping companies with private-sector solution providers.

Kim Se-hyun, Head of the Busan Office of the Korea Shipowners’ Association, said, “This briefing is an opportunity to translate the AX roadmap presented in our strategy report into practical implementation in vessel operations.”

He added, “We will continue to serve as a bridge between the shipping industry and solution providers so that Korean shipping companies can move beyond reviewing AI adoption and advance toward actual implementation and operation.”
